Owens Corning Basement Finishing System Effects on Autism

We’ve recently discovered a revolutionary use for the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System™: to minimize sounds that may be painful to people with sound hypersensitivity.
In 2008, Researchers at Temple University and TALK Institute partnered with Owens Corning to learn whether the application of sound absorbing materials (in the form of Owens Corning’s 95% sound absorbent finishing system) to classroom walls and ceilings would improve students’ attention. The answer appears to be a resounding yes. The results showed an increase in attention during classroom activities and an unexpected boost in students’ engagement with each other. A six week long study was designed by a research team and the results of the study were amazing…
 Frequency of students’ non-attending behaviors decreased over the course of the study
 Self-regulation, attention and sensory sensitivities stabilized
 Parents reported positive change in self-regulation, attention and sensory sensitivities in the home environment after school
 Teachers reported that teaching sessions were more productive
 Students were observed to initiate and reciprocate social interaction for the first time. For some of the children, this had never been seen before!
 A few quotes from the students, “Can listen without pain in my ears”, “I love to hear now”, “Now can listen freely”.
Owens Corning’s Basement Finishing System should be considered for anyone with hearing sensitivity. It truly transforms a potentially distracting and painful room into one that is safe for learning and engaging with others.

6/2013: We are pleased to announce that the Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™, through the Owens Corning Foundation, will be awarding one deserving family affected by Autism a free finished basement. Check back, more photos and story to come!
We wrote the book on acoustics.
Well, we haven’t written a book. But many acoustic reference or textbooks have been drawn in part from data and research performed at the Owens Corning Science and Technology Center in Granville, Ohio.
If you think the field of acoustics is new – think again. The proliferation of electronic components and affordable home theater equipment has pushed the envelope on consumer awareness, but we’ve had a dedicated Acoustical Research Laboratory in Granville since the sixties. Our facility is nationally accredited* and internationally recognized for our breakthrough research and testing in all acoustic applications – consumer, commercial and industrial. At Owens Corning we don’t just understand the industry. We helped create it.
